Is the RBT Exam Multiple Choice? Total Questions and Time

Yes, the RBT exam is 100% multiple-choice with 85 questions in total and 90 minutes to finish the entire exam.
You will be given four answer options for every question. So you won’t have to write essays or fill in blanks — just pick the best answer from a list of answers.
How Many Questions Are on the RBT Exam?
There are 85 questions in total, with 75 scored questions and 10 “pilot” questions (these don’t count toward your score but are mixed in).
But the thing is that you won’t know which questions are pilots, so you must treat every question seriously.
You’ll have 90 minutes to finish the entire exam. That means you get about 1 minute per question, which is pretty manageable, especially if you’ve practiced a bit.
What’s the RBT Exam Like?
Picture this: you’re tested on realistic work scenarios — nothing random or off-topic.
Each of the questions ties back to what you’d actually face working with clients. Here’s what one RBT wrote on Reddit that I think says it best:
“They aren’t tricky questions, but they do test your ability to think about a real situation, like what you’d do if a client has a tantrum or if your supervisor gives you new data to collect.”
I must tell you that, unlike other exams, you need not memorize huge paragraphs. It’s all about understanding ABA concepts and how you can apply them.
What Syllabus Areas Are Covered?
The BACB (Behavior Analyst Certification Board) uses its RBT Task List to build the test. So, you’ll see questions spread across six areas:
Domain | Estimated Questions |
---|---|
Measurement | ~10-12 |
Assessment | ~6-8 |
Skill Acquisition | ~20 |
Behavior Reduction | ~20 |
Documentation & Reporting | ~8-10 |
Professional Conduct | ~8-10 |
