How Many Times Can You Take the RBT Exam | What If You Fail?

How Many Times Can You Take the RBT Exam

You can take the RBT exam 8 times in 1 year, with at least 7 days between each try. After 8 failed attempts or if the year expires, you must restart the certification process from the beginning.

So, you failed your exam? Don’t worry, it’s not the end of your RBT dream.

The good thing about this exam is that if you don’t pass the RBT exam the first time. Or the second, or the third, you will be eligible to appear for the exam multiple times.

By the way, I have a RBT Exam preparation mini guide here, if you want to check it out.

You get 8 Chances in 12 months

Once the BACB approves your application, you’ll have 12 full months to pass the RBT exam, and within that allocated time, you’re allowed to take the test up to 8 times.

That’s it. Eight attempts per application cycle.

What happens if you can’t pass the 8 exam? If you hit all 8 and still don’t pass, you’ll have to start over with a brand-new application.

Failed the Exam? Here’s What Happens

If you don’t pass your exam, again, don’t panic. It happens, and there is still a way for you to apply again.

You’ll:

  • Get your score immediately after the exam
  • Need to wait 7 full days before you can retake
  • Still be within the same application period (no new fees)

As long as you’re under the 8-attempt limit and still within the 12-month window, you’re good to go.

What If You Run Out on the 8th Attempt?

As I mentioned above, if you use all 8 tries, you’ll have to:

  1. Wait until your 12-month period ends
  2. Start a new application
  3. Redo your background check
  4. Resubmit your 40-hour training
  5. Complete another Initial Competency Assessment

It’s not ideal, but it’s doable, and you will be able to give your best the next year, and this time with much more knowledge and experience.

I have a full study guide for all the domains. If you want, you can check it out here, and for the test series, click here.

Is There an Age Limit for the RBT Exam?

Yes, you need to be at least 18 years old to apply.

But there’s no upper limit, though. Theoretically, this means you can apply even if you are 50.

So, if you meet the requirements and pass, you’re in and no matter your age.

How to Reapply if You Exhaust Your Attempts?

You can’t reapply while your current 12-month window is still active.

But once it expires:

  • Submit a new RBT application to the BACB
  • Pay the $50 fee again
  • Upload updated documentation (training, background check, assessment)
  • Wait for approval, then restart testing

What to Expect in Retaking the Exam?

The good thing about this exam is that you’ll get your score report showing where you need improvement

Every attempt is the same length and format, and the exam will be different each time, but based on the same content breakdown. So, if you master them, you will be fully ready for it, as it will be the same as before, syllabus-wise.

If you’re retaking it, I want you to review your weakest domains first and master them.

Can I take the test again right after I fail?

No, you have to wait at least 7 days.

Do I pay again if I retake the test?

Yes, you have to pay for the retake only if your application expires. Otherwise, you’re still covered.

What if I fail all 8 attempts?

You’ll need to reapply with a new set of documents and start fresh.

Is the exam harder after multiple tries?

No, the questions change, but the format stays the same. So, you need to prep smarter, not just harder, and you will be ready for it as you will be much more experienced.

How many people pass the first time?

About 80% pass on the first try. Retake pass rates drop to around 45–50%.

My personal advice would be that failing the RBT exam isn’t the end of the road for you. You still get 8 tries.

If you space them out, study with intent, and focus on the feedback, you’ve got plenty of chances to pass, and I trust that you will be able to crack it.

And Good luck to you! Let me know your preparation strategy, if you have passed or not, in the comment section below. Let’s encourage each other on the journey.
